This collection (1961-1999) contains reports, publication issues, newsletter issues, memos, statements, press releases, and a policy guide received by Carroll Webber during his time as a member and as president of the Pitt/Greenville Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina. Also included are the first four issues of the ACLU "Stand" Magazine (2014-2015).

Biographical/historical information

According to the donor Carroll Webber, the Pitt/Greenville Chapter was very active during the 1970s and 1980s. Its presidents included Charles Cain, Jean Lowry, Carroll Webber, and William Byrd. Cases that needed legal action were referred to the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union in Raleigh, N.C. In 1998, the chapter was closed in order not to divide effort and energy between the chapter and the newly created chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Scope and arrangement

This collection is housed in two archival boxes that include information about the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of North Carolina. The first box contains reports, publication issues, newsletter issues, memos, statements, press releases, and a policy guide received by Carroll Webber during his time as a member and as preside of the Pitt/Greenville Chapter of the ACLU of NC. Included are issues of the ACLU State Lobbyist, Bill of Rights Lobby/ACLU State Lobbyist, the Civil Liberties Alert, ACLU Bill of Rights Lobby Issue Brief, and Spotlight; Civil Liberties in the 100th Congress (1987); Freedom Through Dissent (1961/1962 annual report); and Freedom Then, Now and Tomorrow (1994/1995 annual report). Also included are the first four issues of the ACLU "Stand" Magazine (2014-2015).

The second box contains meeting minutes, lists of members, announcements, community services, and Bylaws and Guidelines. Community Service Directory compiled by the League of Women Voters (1974) is included within the collection. Additionally, there are papers from the Raleigh and Princeville Civil Liberty Chapters.
