This collection contains a seventeen-page letter from medical missionary Herbert P. Ramsey writing from Soochow, China, in 1924 about his experiences as surgeon at Soochow Hospital. Also included is a letter written in 1927 by his brother William H. Ramsey describing the recent escape of Herbert Ramsey and his family from Soochow in the face of anti-Western instigators.


Biographical/historical information

Dr. Herbert P. Ramsey (b. circa 1985) was a Washington native. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1920 and served in the Army during World War I. Following the war, he became the chief resident of George Washington University Hospital. By 1924, he worked at Soochow Hospital China as the chief of the obstetrics and gynecology department. In 1927 he and his family escaped Soochow in the face of anti-Western instigators, and he started his own private practice upon returning to the United States. Dr. Ramsey formally retired in 1975 and passed away in 1985.

This collection contains a seventeen-page letter (1924) from medical missionary Herbert P. Ramsey writing from Soochow, China, about his experiences as a surgeon at Soochow Hospital, alongside the original envelope the letter was sent with. Also included is a letter (1927) written by his brother, William H. Ramsey, describing the recent escape of Herbert Ramsey and his family from Soochow in the face of an anti-Western instigator, alongside the original envelope. Also included is a business card announcing the opening of William H. Ramsey's office for the general practice of law in Washington, D.C.
