This collection consists of six ledgers (1946-1970) which are account records for Renfrew Printing Company, 716 Dickinson Avenue, Greenville, North Carolina. These ledgers were kept by the business owner Sherman McDonald Parks (1914-1972) Also included are a photograph of Sherman Parks and a newspaper clipping recounting his World War II experience with Company K, 109th Infantry.
Sherman McDonald Parks was born on 15 November 1914. He served with Company K, 109 Infantry Regiment during World War II. After returning from the war, he was the business owner of Renfrew Printing Company in Greenville, North Carolina, until his death on 9 June 1972.
The main body of this collection is three ledger books and three cash books that record the accounts of Renfrew Printing Company. Each book is separated by the years it recorded. The first ledger records the year 1946, the second ledger is 1947-1948, and the third ledger is 1948-1950. The first cash book records 1946-1950, the second cash book is 1951-1960, and the third cash book is May of 1960 through September of 1970.
Each entry in the ledger book contains the number of the receipt, the date of the purchase, the customer's name, the purchased item, and the price that was paid. The cash books entries contain the date of the transaction, the name of the customer and the amount that was paid. Some of the customers were Greenville Rotary Club, Drs. Pace and Crisp, Greenville Merchants Association, East Carolina Teachers College/East Carolina College, and several churches and realty agencies.
Materials printed included, among many other examples, announcements, contracts, certificates, college bulletins, letterheads, sales cards and slips, postal cards, laundry tickets, tickets, envelopes, check register sheets, financial papers, invitations, repair tickets, and vaccination certificates.
The other items in this collection are a photograph of Sherman M. Parks and a newspaper clipping recounting Sherman Park's experience in Company K, 109th infantry, during World War II.
