This collection includes materials related to George Sutton (b. November 1757 – d. 1827) of Durant's Neck, North Carolina, and his family. Included is a King James Version Family Bible printed in 1752, with written genealogical records of the Sutton family.
Biographical/historical information
George Sutton (b. November 1757 - d. 1827) was born in Gloucestershire, England, to John and Jane Sutton. In January of 1778, he married his wife, Sarah, and together they had at least 6 daughters and 7 sons. Sarah died in October of 1812 and George died in June of 1827.
Scope and arrangement
Collection consists of a family Bible owned by the George Sutton family of Durant's Neck, New Hope Township in Perquimans County, NC, including holograph genealogical notes (1739-1827). The original title page and first few pages of the Bible are missing. The New Testament title page is present and provides the following information: The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Newly Translated out of the Original Greek, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised (Edinburhg: Printed by Adrian Watkins His Majesty's Printer, 1752). Also included are written Sutton family genealogical records (undated), located on the back of the New Testament title page and on two separate sheets of paper.
