The Pitt County Medical Society has a history going back to 1867 and was given a charter by the North Carolina Medical Society in 1903. In 1974 the Pitt County Medical and Dental Society changed its name to the Pitt County Medical Society. The Society seeks to help "the physicians of Pitt County promote and maintain the integrity of medicine."
This collection consists of a bound copy of the constitution and bylaws for the Pitt County Medical Society, owned and heavily annotated by William Cobb Whitfield, MD. In addition to the bylaws and constitution, the society's "black list" of patients from 1897 and 1898 is also included. The black list covered patients who have "not made satisfactory arrangements about settlement of his or her medical account." There is a note in the front of the book that dates the copy circa October 11, 1899. More information on Pitt County Medical Society can be located in the Laupus Library Manuscript Collection, LL 02.33.
