The first Ryves, or Rives, can be traced back to Robert Ryves in 1465 in France. Robert Ryves moved to England in 1587, where the next few generations stayed until William Rives moved to Virginia in 1650. William Rives' great grandson William Rives settled in North Carolina sometime in the mid-1700s, where the family has remained since. The portrait in the collection is of John Gaston Rives, Jr., who was born on June 24, 1854 in Edgecomb County, NC. He married Martha Amanda Tyson on March 21, 1883. John Gaston Rives, Jr., died on February 21, 1922.
The collection contains Rives family records. In three pages removed from the Rives Family Bible, there are records of births, deaths, and marriages dating between 1818 and 1957. The collection contains the genealogy of the Rives family traced from their origins in France in 1465 from Robert Ryves. Finally, there is a photograph of John Gaston Rives, Jr. who lived between 1854 and 1922.
