James Lafayette Whitehurst was born on November 5, 1861 in Bethel Township, Pitt County, NC. Most of the later generations stayed in Pitt County or moved to Martin County.

The book was written by Margaret Ann Whitehurst Johnson in 2006. The book contains blank spaces to fill in births, deaths, and marriages.
