Thomas Mann was born in 1718 in Hertford County, NC. He owned almost 4,000 acres of land in Edgecombe County at the time of his death in 1792. The collection spans 1745, 1752, and 1910 including a land grant to Thomas Mann from George II, a plat map of a servey of Nann's property, State Fair entry flags, and various fragmented documents. The strength of the collection is Thomas Mann's legacy.
Thomas Mann was born in 1718 in Hertford County, NC to parents Thomas Mann and Bridgett Hooker. In 1740, he followed his brother John Mann to Edgecombe County, where he acquired numerous tracts of land through purchases and land grants. Before May 18, 1752, he married Elizabeth, most likely the daughter of James Denton from Hertford County. In 1783, his holdings were nearly 4,000 acres of land. He died in Nash County, NC in 1792 on his "Manor Plantation" property on Swift Creek and Short Swamp. Hattie B. Arrington may be a descendent of Thomas Mann. There is limited information regarding the indenture to John Cooper from John Lord Carteret, and to Earl Granville for 384 acres, dated 1752. John Lord Carteret was granted land by King George II in Granville County, which came from Edgecombe County. The collection contains some documents from the 1910 NC State Fair in Raleigh, NC. The State Agricultural Society held the first State Fair in 1853. In 1910, the state fair had its first airplane exhibit. Today, it is still an ongoing tradition.
