Collection (ca. 1930–1954) manuscript and printed materials relating to the early history of Pitt County, North Carolina, and the Greenville High School Class of 1946, including revised manuscript drafts of a history of Pitt County, including correspondence, clippings, brochures, pamphlets, maps and rationing labels.

Biographical/historical information

Miss Jesse Rountree Moye was interested in the history of Pitt County and the role her family played in the community. Her ancestor's contributions to Pitt County pre-dated the American Revolution and continued well into the twentieth century. Miss Moye was herself an active contributor to the community, researching the history of the county as well as her own family history. She also actively participated in the community herself, collected and saved mementos of community events, and began writing a history of Pitt County. Her family donated the land for the site of Pitt County Memorial Hospital in the memory of her father, Jesse Rountree Moye. Note: The Greenville High School items and the WWII ephemera may have been compiled by Edward S. Williams Jr., the primary donor of the collection.

Scope and arrangement

The Pitt County History materials includes manuscripts and notes on early Pitt County history, 1775–1954, written by Jesse Rountree Moye prior to 1955.

The Greenville High School and WWII ephemera includes printed material apparently compiled by Edward Williams Jr., consisting of programs, playbills, handbooks and other material related to Greenville High School, 1939–1946. There is also a collection (10 items) of WWII era rationing labels and price tags.

Oversized material includes an original map of North Carolina highways in 1938 and an original 1940 War Map of Europe which includes insets of Africa and the British Isles with verso of the Western Hemisphere and the Panama Canal Zone.
