Shadrach "Shade" I. Wooten was born in 1845 in North Carolina. He was married to Henrietta Louise Wooten and was guardian of his sisters sons James Yadkin Joyner and John P. Joyner. The collection spans 1874, 1880, and 1966 and includes notes, correspondence, and expense records pertaining to Shadrach Wooten's guardianship over his two nephews. The strength of this collection is expense records written by Shadrach Wooten.

Biographical/historical information

Shadrach "Shade" I. Wooten was born in 1845 in North Carolina to Council S. Wooten and Eliza Wooten. He married Henrietta Louise Wooten in 1869. The collection consists of notes and expense records relating to Shadrach "Shade" I. Wooten's guardianship over James Yadkin Joyner, John P. Joyner, the grandsons of Council S. Wooten, and the sons of his sister, Sarah Wooten Joyner. Shadrach Wooten took care of James after his parents died before he was one. As an educator and administrator, James Y. Joyner helped to propel education in North Carolina.

Scope and arrangement

The collection contains notes, correspondence, and expense records pertaining to Shadrach I. Wooten's guardianship of James Yadkin Joyner and John P. Joyner, the grandsons of his father, Council Wooten, and the sons of his sister, Sarah (Sallie) Wooten Joyner. The correspondence includes one letter written by Shadrach I. Wooten noting the expense for cloth, and another letter written by James Y. Joyner regarding his travels to Hillsboro and King's Mountain. In addition, there is two-page article from The State dated June 15, 1966 called "A Dreamer Who Saw His Dream Come True: Under James Joyner, the schools of North Carolina took their greatest leap forward" by Calvin D. Jarrett.
