Biographical/historical information

Lucy E. Briggs was born April 2, 1835 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina and died October 11, 1862. Her father was Senator Asa Briggs (1811-1878) and her mother was Martha Elizabeth "Patsy" Andrews Biggs (1814-1885). Lucy had many siblings with only a few surviving to adulthood. The Biggs family were enslavers, having almost 14 enslaved people before emancipation. Asa Biggs was a senator and later served as a Confederate district judge.
