The Insurance Survey of Greenville collection contains a letter (December 31, 1937) and an insurance survey (December 27, 1937) of the city of Greenville, North Carolina.

Biographical/historical information

The New York Underwriters Agency was established by Alexander Stoddard January 1, 1864, to transact the agency business of certain fire insurance companies. Starting January 1, 1894, by the Hartford Fire Insurance Company engaged in a permanent arrangement whereby the policies of the New York Underwriters Agency are guaranteed by the Hartford. The New York Underwriters Agency does business through the whole United States and its management, agency plant, and lines remain entirely separate and distinct from those of the Hartford.

Scope and arrangement

The Insurance Survey of Greenville collection contains a letter (December 31, 1937) and an insurance survey (December 27, 1937) of the city of Greenville. The letter is from B. S. McKeel, State Agent for A. & J. H. Stoddart, General Agents for the New York Underwriters Insurance Company, to the Moseley Brothers (assumed contractors) concerning improvements that need to be made, including increasing the number of chemical extinguishers in the Sheppard Memorial Library and decreasing the rate on City Hall.

The Moseley Brothers are known as B.W. Moseley and A.M. Moseley. They represent various insurance companies as well as owning their own Real Estate Firm.

The insurance survey concerns prices for insurance on various buildings, recommends different types of insurance including tornado insurance, sample contracts, a description of the property, and a letter (Undated) to J.A. Watson, Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the Town of Greenville concerning the different recommendations.
