Augusta Lois Oden was born November 14, 1877, in Beaufort County, North Carolina, to Alpha Oden and W. A. Oden. She married Charles J. Berthel, a mechanical engineer originally from Saxony, Germany, on August 9, 1911, and died on May 5, 1961, in Washington, NC, where she was then buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
