Biographical/historical information
The Jones Family Papers document two different generations. The Jones Family (circa 1800s) of Gum Neck, Tyrrell County, North Carolina, pertain primarily to Bartlett Jones, C. B. Jones, Carney Jones, W. S. Jones, T. David Jones and Timothy Jones, Sr. The second generation focuses on Bartlett Braxton Jones (from Elizabeth City, NC, 1895-1976) an attorney in the Justice Department, Washington, DC, and a National officer of the Society of the Cincinnati, and his wife Helen Bryan Chamberlain Jones (from Kinston, NC, 1904-1984.) They were both active in Democratic Party politics and social activities. Bartlett and his wife both died in Kinston and were buried in Elizabeth City, NC.
Scope and arrangement
The early papers (1785-1974) consist of deeds and other land records, business and estate records in Tyrrell County and Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Of interest is the last will and testament of John Pool (1826) which mentions gifts of slaves, one being named "Sutton," and the future gift of Sutton's next child. Also included is a report to Elizabeth City, NC, Chamber of Commerce by the Committee on Erection of Graded & Normal Schools (undated).
Also present are materials (circa 1940s-1950s) consisting of clippings, a scrapbook, correspondence, photographic prints and printed materials. These items document the activities of Bartlett Braxton Jones and his wife Helen Bryan Chamberlain Jones. In addition, are biographical and historical writings (1941-2002) by Carlyle Windley (an assumed relative.) These include letters, invitations, periodicals, printed forms and genealogical materials pertaining to the Jones Family and other extended families. This includes a transcript of information and dates transcribed from the Bible of Bartlett Jones, Jr. (1821-1893) and some handwritten information by Windley on the career of Bartlett Braxton Jones. Also included is a letter from the White House (1950) to Mrs. Jones from First Lady Bess Truman. In the oversized material is a certificate of award signed by President Harry Truman (1951).
