The 5th North Carolina Infantry was a Confederate regiment formed in Halifax, NC, in July of 1861, shortly after the start of the American Civil War. It consisted of ten companies, named Company A through Company K. Company G primarily consisted of men from Wilson County. Companies H and K primarily consisted of men from Gates and Rowan County, respectively. The infantry fought through most of the Civil War until it surrendered, alongside the Army of Northern Virginia, in April of 1865. Eighty-one (81) members of the infantry were paroled following the surrender.
