Scope and arrangement
The material in this collection spans more than seventy years. The works of Mutual Life Insurance Company executive John Rose Taylor are the focus of this manuscript collection. New Bern, N.C., in Craven County, is the geographical focal point of the collection. Most of the collection dates from the early to middle twentieth century. However, the articles containing biographical information on John Rose Taylor are from the year 2000.
The majority of this collection is related to Mutual Life Insurance Company and includes the transcripts of the following types of talks: inspirational talks, life insurance-related speeches, radio talks and salesmanship lectures. The radio talks date from 1941 to 1945 and focus on life insurance and economic security. There are also a series of salesmanship lectures from ca. 1935. These lectures offer listeners tips on how to become a better salesman. The miscellaneous speeches are from ca. 1941-1945 and include advice gained from Taylor's more than thirty-five years of experience in the insurance business. His series of inspirational talks are from 1941-1942 and pertain to how life insurance can help you.
There are also a number of different speeches not related to life insurance. These speeches included those given at civic events, commencement speeches, speeches about New Bern, N.C. and religious speeches. For more details see container list.
