Scope and arrangement
The collection contains 3 ledgers and loose papers removed from the ledgers. Those documents attached to the ledger pages were not removed. The materials relate to the law practice of John H. Bonner in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Included in the papers are abstracts of deeds, memorandums, grants, mortgages, maps and land conveyances. Topics covered include inheritance information, marriages, and transfers of property ownership. In the first few pages of each ledger, there are recorded indexes of names which refer to corresponding memorandums. Also present are a few writings, poems and observances of town life by John Bonner within the ledgers. Most of these can be found in the latter pages of the third volume ledger.
Within the ledgers are also many family trees sketched by Bonner. Specific family genealogies include the John Bonner Family (vol. 3, p. 116-127, 142-143, 177-178), Richard Bonner family (vol. 3, p. 183), Brown family (vol. 3, p. 142-143), Blount family (vol. 3, p. 150-154), Bowen family (vol. 3, p. 142-143), Harding family (vol. 2, p. 107), Haven family (vol. 3, p. 115-117, 142), Hawks family (vol. 3, p. 116) and Latham family (vol. 3, p. 116-117).
