Enders P. Huey (b. 1918) graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of 1941) and was first assigned to the light cruiser USS RICHMOND (CL-9) stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was aboard the RICHMOND when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Huey attended Submarine School in New London, CT, in 1942, and subsequently served on submarines in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he participated in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. During his career in the Navy, submarines, education, training, and executive management figured prominently. He served as directorate, individual training; and as commander of the naval training center in Orlando, Florida. He retired with the rank of captain. Huey was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with combat "V" for sinking and damaging Japanese vessels during the war, and also received other commendations and medals.

Scope and arrangement

The collection contains a small amount of correspondence and other materials that are primarily concerned with efforts to reconstruct the career of submarine USS SKATE (SS-305) from war patrol reports. Miscellaneous items include printed materials relating to the Naval Training Center in Orlando, FL, and its commissioning (July 1, 1968); the specifications for the Japanese submarine OYASHIO; and a privately published history of the submarine USS SEA FOX (SS-402).

The bulk of the collection consists of photographs of submarines, aircraft carriers, destroyers, and an oil tanker. Particularly interesting are photographs of the submarine USS SKATE after the first atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll (July 1946). Other submarines included are the USS CHIVO (SS-341), the USS GRENADIER (SS-525), and the USS PERMIT (SS-178). Photographs of nuclear submarines include the first nuclearpowered vessel in the world, the USS NAUTILUS (SSN-571), as well as the USS HADDO (SSN-604) and the USS SNOOK (SSN-592). The world's first fleet ballistic missile submarine, the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (SSBN-598) is also pictured, along with the USS PATRICK HENRY (SSBN-599), the USS ROBERT E. LEE (SSBN-601), and the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (SSBN-600). Aircraft carriers depicted include the USS ESSEX (CV-9), the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CV-39), the USS VALLEY FORGE (CV-45), and the attack carrier USS FORRESTAL (CVA-59). Photographs of destroyers include USS JONAS INGRAM (DD-938), NOA (DD-841), and radar picket destroyer USS HAWKINS (DDR-873). Finally, the oil tanker USS WACCAMAW (AO-109), captained by Huey in the 1960s, is shown in photographs at sea or fueling aircraft carriers.

The collection's remaining photographs contain images of ballistic missile launches from land and sea, officers conducting ship inspections, meetings with foreign Navy personnel, ceremonies, and portraits.
