Biographical/historical information

Colonel Alan S. Rush (1898-1946) was born in New Haven Connecticut, attended Yale University and the U. S. Naval Academy, and was a veteran of both World Wars. He served as a midshipman in the Navy and in 1920 joined the Army, where he was commissioned as a lieutenant. He retired in 1938 but returned to active duty in 1940, receiving the Legion of Merit in 1946 for his service in World War II.

Scope and arrangement

The collection contains correspondence during Colonel Rush's time as a student at Annapolis. Reference is made to the annual summer cruise on battleships, leave cancellations at Christmas, consumption of bootleg whiskey, leisure activities, participation in and correspondence about a variety of sports teams, and deaths due to the Spanish flu epidemic.
