Biographical/historical information

Edwin Nils Johnson served as a United States Naval Reserve (USNR) officer during World War II and the Korea War (1940-1969). He received numerous certificates from military courses and appointments within the USNR. Johnson served with the 7th Fleet Amphibious Force, Beach Party #5, and participated in the invasion on Cebu Island, made other military landings in the Pacific, and returned upon retirement (May 10, 1969).

Scope and arrangement

The collection consists of military papers pertaining to the organization of the 7th Amphibious Force and Beach Party #5. Included are orders for USNR personnel to report for duty; radio call signs; task force organization, mobilization, and orders for deployment on amphibious maneuvers; confidential military maps; personnel rosters; tide charts; medical reports; and journal documentary of troop activities and movements.

Printed material include a history of the 7th Amphibious Force with photographs and a narrative; a document concerning maneuvers on Cebu Island and in the Leyte Gulf that vividly portrays the terrain and troop activities through the use of photographs, maps, and personal histories; books on navigation; and a watch officer's guide book.

Oversized items include a newspaper from Manila (August 11, 1949) that details the introduction and performance of American troops in battles throughout the Pacific, a chart of Cebu Island's harbor and approaches (1944), and a photograph.
