William R. Chester was born on July 5, 1921, to James Lewis and Florence Darlene Chester in Cedar Rapids, IA. His Naval career included tours of duty on three destroyers during WWII. He received the "Wings of Gold" for his attendance at Navy Flight School in 1948 and received two Presidential Unit citations. One Presidential Unit citation was for his action aboard the destroyer Monssen (DD998) in the battle of Leyte Gulf. The other was for his service with Patrol Squadron 47 during the Korean conflict. Additional awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal.
This collection includes a photocopied version of A Journey into the Past: Anecdotes, Recollections, and Reflections, 1921–1994. It is a biographical account of William R. Chester's time in the Navy, the people he encountered, and the tours he served. Also included is a small quantity of photographs.
