Papers (1861-1865) including signature book of prisoners, arrest descriptions. 1 Volume.
Scope and arrangement
James C. Mallison kept this signature book while imprisoned at Fort Warren, Massachusetts (1861-1865). This volume contains signatures of inmates from North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New York, California, and Canada. Often accompanying the signatures are the date, military rank, regiment, former profession, and even some original poetry. The regiments mentioned include: the 2nd Regiment of the N.C. State Troops (also known as the "Washington Grays," which became 1st N.C. Artillery Regiment, Co. K); the 7th Regiment, Co. A, of the N.C. Artillery; the 7th Regiment, Co.'s A, D, E, and I of the N.C. Volunteers; the 10th Regiment, of the N.C. State Troops; and the 5th Regiment, Co. A, of the Ga. Volunteers. The N.Y. Cavalry, Confederate States Navy, and United States Navy are also mentioned with many people listed as "late of U.S. Navy." Former professions listed include: physician, editor, police commissioner, state senator, state legislator, and house delegate. When dates of arrest are listed, a description usually follows which includes the time and place of arrest. These arrest descriptions usually concern political prisoners from Maryland such as the Baltimore police commissioner and mayor and Maryland legislature members.
