Biographical/historical information
The Tar River Oil Company, with mills at Shiloh in Edgecombe County, N.C., manufactured crude and refined cottonseed oils and operated two steamers, the SHILOH and the TARBORO.
Scope and arrangement
The bulk of this collection consists of accounts of purchases by and for the Tar River Oil Company and the two steamers, including the purchase, weighing, and sale of cottonseed and cottonseed oil. Factory supplies purchased include barrels for transportation on the railroad, hardware, oil mill machinery, and building supplies. Records for the provision and repair of the steamers include the purchases of coal and food for use on the steamers, and records of labor in terms of outfitting, repairing the engine, hauling, etc. Especially interesting is the TARBORO captain's report for its operation in September 1902, including time and pay for the crew, information regarding damage done to the schooner L. F. STOWE by the TARBORO, an expense list, and a request for an advance in pay.
For related material see the Henry Clark Bridgers, Jr., Papers (#558).
