Autographed photographs of Naval officers.
Sheldon Hoard Kinney was born in Pasadena, California, on 27 August 1918. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1935, and then attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating with a bachelor's in marine engineering as part of the class of 1941. He then served on and commanded several ships during World War II, becoming the youngest commanding officer of a destroyer-type ship. For his service, he received the Navy Cross and the Legion of Merit, while his ship, USS Bronstein, received a Presidential Unit Citation. Kinney later commanded ships during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and served as Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy. He retired from the Navy in 1972. He went on to be president of the State University of New York Maritime College, and later helped found the World Maritime University of the International Maritime Organization of the United Nations at Malmo, Sweden. Kinney passed away on 11 December 2004.
The collection contains ten photographs of United States Navy officers and a caricature of Rear Admiral Sheldon Kinney. The majority of the photographs are official U.S. Navy photographs of high ranking officers that personally autographed the photo to Kinney. These include photos of Joseph H. Wellings, Charles S. Minter Jr., Arleigh A. Burke, Jerauld Wright, W. G. Cooper, Harold Page Smith, Walter F. Boone, and Robert B. Carney. The remaining two photographs show Kinney with various Navy colleagues seated around a conference table, presumably at the United States Naval Academy, where all of the pictured men served during the 1960s. Their signatures are above their photos.
