Biographical/historical information
Captain Edward G. Miller, a member of the U.S. Naval Class of 1941, served on battleships and destroyers during World War II. Included in his wartime duty was service in the USS WASHINGTON operating in the Atlantic and then reassignment to the USS GHERARDI during the Normandy invasion.
Scope and arrangement
The collection consists primarily of official orders, commendations, and correspondence. Orders (1941-1966) reflect Miller's service in the USS WASHINGTON (1941-1942); USS GHERARDI (1943-1946); USS GYATT (1955); USS ROBERT H. OWENS (1956-1957); USS RALEIGH (1964-1965); and the USS MONROVIA (1966). Other duty included Commander Sixth Fleet (1952), Commander Amphibious Squadron TEN, and Director of the Shipyards Policy Board (1964). Miller's commendations include two Bronze Stars received for duty in France (June 6, 1944) and during the Dominican Republic crisis (April 26-30, 1965).
Official correspondence includes a report from Robert McNamara (1964) concerning the function of the Shipyards Policy Board (1964). Of particular interest are the reports Miller wrote concerning various aspects of the Mediterranean cruise of the USS MONROVIA (1965-1966) and the reasons for the low enlistment in PHIBLANT (1965).
Miscellaneous items include copies of the magazine Knickerbocker from the USS NEW YORK's Midshipmen's Practice Cruise (1940), the USS WASHINGTON's Wash-Rag (1942), Capsule Facts of the Armed Forces--Dominican Republic (1965), and The Gator--Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (May 21, 1965), which discusses the evacuation of the Dominican Republic and the role of the crew of the USS RALEIGH during that crisis. Miscellaneous newspaper clippings include articles concerning Captain Miller and the USS WASHINGTON. For related materials see O.H. 92.
