Various unrelated items (1862-1865) concerning the Civil War including two 1862 letters, an 1865 oath of allegiance, Harper's Weekly lithographs (1862), an Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad Company 1862 statement, an 1862 $1000 Civil War bond from North Carolina;, and photocopies of a memoir written about fifty years after the war and transcribed in 1978, an 1862 letter and an 1863 circular.
Original material includes a statement (1862) of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad Company; an oath of allegiance by members of Capt. B. Hill's Brigade taken at U.S. Forces Headquarters, Gunthersville, Alabama, May 16, 1865; water-colored lithographs from Harper's Weekly (1862) containing scenes of Washington, Elizabeth City, and Kinston, N.C.; and a $1000 Civil War bond issued by North Carolina in 1862 and signed by North Carolina Governor Zebulon B. Vance. Also included is a letter (January 11, 1862) from Wilson Massie in New Orleans, Louisiana, to V. H. Rodes in Greenwood, Mississippi, concerning items mailed, accounts, and the relative value of gold and currency. Another letter (November 22, 1862) is written by Albert, a member of the Fifth Massachusetts Infantry while stationed at New Bern, North Carolina, to his mother. In it Albert describes a trip by water to Washington to an expedition to Tarboro where many prisoners were taken. He also mentions comrades who are sick.
Photocopied items include a letter, a circular, and a memoir. The letter (April 1862) was written by a Union soldier of the Rhode Island Volunteers to his mother describing the successful bombardment of Fort Macon, including strategy and weapons used. Also included is a brief comment on Beaufort, N.C. The circular (July 1863) was issued by Brigadier General B. H. Robertson and was intended for regimental commanders. It pertains to the necessity of grazing horses at regulated hours and controlling their movements rather than allowing them to wander over fields. The transcript was prepared in 1978 of "My Experiences in the Civil War" which was originally written by Laura Augusta Jordan-Applewhite (wife of John Thomas Applewhite) fifty years after the Civil War ended.
