Biographical/historical information
The Star Brick Warehouse in Durham, N.C., was completed in 1914 and closed in 1973 when the tobacco designation program began and farmers were obligated to sell at the warehouse of their designation.
Scope and arrangement
The journals contain records of farmers' sales with account number and price for sale as well as the name of buyers, corresponding account numbers, and price of purchase. Some journals include summaries for farmers, noting pounds, average, and money as well as poundage and payment for dealers and the warehouse. Also included are journals for the Big 4 Warehouse and Banner Warehouse. Time cards provide names of warehouse employees, along with social security number, days worked, hours, wage, and net salary. Occasionally sex and race designations are also given. General ledgers reflect bank deposits, bills, commissions, expenses, exchange, farmers' bills, interest, labor, leaf, loss and gain, speculator's association, and tax. An account book, which apparently belonged to one of the owners, records cash, notes, and guano by name of farmer or tenant farmer. Floor sheets record sales in serial number order, giving name, ID number and address, buyer, grade, pounds, price, and amount. A long and short journal is a record of dealers for the Big 4 and Star Brick warehouses. The payments book is a record of payments to employees and farmers. The employee ledger includes a list of floor and leaf managers. Miscellaneous items include a farmers account book, with tobacco photographs and testimonials for a fertilizer company, and an auction blotter.
