Biographical/historical information

Nancy (Nannie) Darden attended the State Normal and Industrial College (UNC-Greensboro), Greensboro, N.C. She then taught in various schools in Pitt County, N.C.

Scope and arrangement

Most of the correspondence is family related, to Nannie from her mother during Nannie's years at the State Normal and Industrial College (1907-1910). The letters contain comments on cotton prices, farm life, and an outbreak of diphtheria at the college (1908). Letters discussing Nannie's teaching responsibilities in Pitt County are also included (1912). Numerous letters from her brother Flavius talk of life at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. (1918). A bulletin from the Oak Ridge Institute, Oak Ridge, N.C. (1899), which was attached to a report card for G. W. Darden; an Oak Ridge Institute newsletter; and an editorial from the American Journal of Health recommending the Oak Ridge Institute on the basis of its sanitation are also included. There is also a letter from Lt. George C. Round discussing the fiftieth anniversary (1911) of the 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas).

The collection also contains photographs of family members, probably Nancy Darden and her sister Josie, at the State Normal and Industrial College.

There are several promissory notes and a church subscription note designed to raise funds for the construction of Beaver (?) Creek Meeting House. Also included is a commencement announcement from the N.C. State Normal and Industrial College (1913) as well as a summer school bulletin (1913). Miscellaneous items include post cards of Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., and newspaper clippings.
