Scope and arrangement

Included is a letter (February, 1863) from M. A. Hoyt to Sally Marshall discussing the situation with the "Yankees" in North Carolina, enslaved persons seeking freedom to Washington, N.C., and the sale of enslaved persons. A deed (July, 1866) by Willis W. Cherry grants land in Wayne County, N.C., for a school and Masonic lodge and includes a plat. Also included are miscellaneous genealogical notes concerning the Marshall family.
