Biographical/historical information
The Sans Souci Book Club was organized in 1902 to "advance the literary efforts and promote social activity among its members." Since that time many prominent women in Greenville have joined the organization to learn, travel to historic sites, socialize, and contribute to a variety of charities and other institutions, including Sheppard Memorial Library.
Scope and arrangement
Minutes (1915-1972) comprise the bulk of the collection. Although usually quite brief, the minutes reflect the format of meetings and work of the program, book, and emergency committees. Occasional references to civic work or charitable donations are included. The minutes also contain attendance rolls and newspaper clippings pertaining to club activities.
Correspondence (1930-1971, undated), a small portion of the collection, consists chiefly of requests for donations, invitations, and individuals' and organizations' expressions of gratitude for various gifts or expressions of sympathy.
A scrapbook (1913-1973) contains printed material (chiefly club program booklets) reflecting the organization's meeting topics and special events.
Included in a folder of miscellaneous material are a manuscript speech outlining the history of the club (1952?), memorials to deceased members, and copies of the club's constitution and bylaws.
