Biographical/historical information
Miss Lind, a Tioga, Pennsylvania, native, served from 1924-1968 as a Methodist missionary to China, Japan, and Brazil.
Scope and arrangement
This collection consists essentially of correspondence (1930-1971) and notes of Jenny Lind.
The correspondence is comprised of letters to Jenny Lind from other missionaries in addition to copies of form newsletters sent by her to friends and family in America. Evident in these letters are descriptions of the habits and customs of people she served in addition to observations regarding Chinese political unrest and the frequent Japanese and Communist attacks of the 1930s. The Chinese political situation of the 1950s is mentioned in connection with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek whose role in political affairs is alluded to in various letters throughout the correspondence.
Materials on Brazil found among the notes consist basically of compiled data on two topics: public school education and public health. Comments on health and disease in China may also be found.
Also included in the collection are rather brief descriptions of Liberia and India based on Miss Lind's traveling accounts. Among other correspondence is a letter (Aug. 27, 1931) concerning the Yangtze River flood, mentioning its cause and effect. Another letter (May 26, 1930) provides brief descriptions of Chinese theatre.
Miscellaneous items include annual reports (1957-1959) and typed copies of what appears to be scripture-based teaching materials.
