                Scope and arrangement
For the most part, the collection (1733-1943) consists of some thirteen deeds, two wills and fifteen newspapers. The deeds, which date from 1733 to 1904, were contracted primarily by members of the Stallings family of Perquimans County, N.C. The wills included in the collection are those of Elias Stallings (1778) and Jacob Jordan (1795). The Jordan will, written in Chowan County, is quite interesting and provides a comprehensive listing of his bequests, including a number of enslaved persons. A variety of both in-state and out-of-state newspapers, dating from 1802 to 1943, comprise a major portion of the collection and are housed in the oversize folder (299.os1). Of particular interest are two Virginian newspapers, the Virginia Pilot (May 7, 1910) and the Ledger-Dispatch (May 9, 1910), both of which carry headlines devoted to the death of King Edward VII of Great Britain and the succession of George V. Also included are the Eastern Courier (February 4, 1897) of Hertford, N.C., The Connecticut Courant (June 21, 1802), and the Richmond Enquirer (July 1859).
Additional materials in the collection include an 1840 land assessment of lots in Hertford, a Bible record of births and deaths, presumably of Stallings enslaved persons (1842-1887), a newspaper clipping of Hertford Herald editorial (August 19, 1921), which comments on a "home coming day for all the absent ones who ever lived in Perquimans County; " an undated clipping entitled "The Battle of Plymouth," which describes the recapturing of Plymouth, N.C. by Confederate forces on April 20, 1864; another clipping (1932) entitled "Town of Edenton Has Rich Background of Colonial," which describes the settling of the town; and, lastly, a partial genealogical chart of the Stallings family of Perquimans County.
