Biographical/historical information
The Imperial Tobacco Company (est. 1901) with American headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, operates branches throughout the southeastern United States. The home office of the firm is in Great Britain with branches also located in Ireland.
Scope and arrangement
This collection is mainly concerned with the Greenville, N.C., office of the Eastern North Carolina Branch, although there are limited records included for offices located in Farmville, Washington, Williamston, and Robersonville.
Correspondence in the collection details branch office and inter-office business transactions (1928-1957). Most of the correspondence is between Richmond and Greenville. Records of the office describe the day-to-day transactions of a major tobacco company. Sales by local warehouses to the company, the purchase and shipment of tobacco, handling procedures in the warehouse, and the different grades of tobacco are topics reflected throughout the collection. Other records describe the jobs performed in the warehouses and the kinds of equipment and materials needed to run the operation.
Ledgers detail the financial dealings of the company, the movement and processing of tobacco leaf, equipment used in the operation of the company, and the amounts and kinds of tobacco purchased and sold.
