Paul Webb Chapman was born on June 11, 1937, in Waco, TX. In 1961, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Baylor University. After graduating from Baylor, he served in the U.S. Marien Corps from 1961 to 1981. During his service, he deployed on two tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and did two tours as an instructor in a training squadron. In 1974, he graduated from East Carolina University with a Master of Arts in Education in History while he was stationed at Cherry Point, NC. With this degree, he became a history instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He later returned to school to receive his Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Amberton University in Dallas, TX.
This collection consists of papers of a Marine officer in service during the Vietnam War. It includes a photocopy of a handwritten diary (1969-1972) dated from December 23, 1969, to "the day before Thanksgiving, 1972" (November 22). The diary also includes scans of various related materials, including a poem (1970) by an unknown author; scans (1970) of various magazine articles on maintenance practices; a safe-conduct pass (undated) issued by American forces which allows the holder to traverse enemy land without harassment; a scan (1971) of the "Raleigh News & Observer" with an article on Lieutenant William L. Cally's statement to a jury; and a list (undated) of "First Maw Brevity Codes" with a list of numbers that correspond to various vulgar phrases. Also included is a report (1970) to a Commanding General on the PLAYBOY program, which used visual reconnaissance and FAC/TAC(A) services in a hostile environment; a map (undated) of a Vietnamese area; a special air operations chart (undated); correspondence (1970) from Captain J. L. Adkinson, Jr., on the end of tour, including recommendations for improvements, awards and decorations; a scanned article (1971) from "Air Force Magazine" entitled "Jet FACs—The Fast Movers"; and various scanned photographs (undated).
