Biographical/historical information
Samuel Lloyd Sheep was a noted educator in Elizabeth City and the surrounding area. Involved in education for his entire life, Sheep was president of Atlantic Collegiate Institute. Upon his death in 1928, the Board of Graded School Trustees named the Grammar School Building in Elizabeth City, N.C., in his memory.
Scope and arrangement
The bulk of this collection is made up of school catalogues of the Atlantic Collegiate Institute (1904-1906).These catalogs describe the history of the school, curriculum, fees, and various other types of information pertaining to the school. Also included are school report cards of Pauline Hinton from Miss Martin's School (1873-1874), 1908-1909 school catalog of Graded Schools of Elizabeth City, N.C., "The Tatler" for Elizabeth City High School for Christmas 1915 and photographs.
Correspondence in this collection consists of two items. One item concerns a resolution passed by the Board of Graded School Trustees naming the Grammar School in Sheep's memory. The other letter is from newspaper editor R. B. Creecy giving a complimentary subscription to The Economist, a local newspaper.
