Papers (1937-1964) consisting of correspondence, speeches, articles, talks, photographs, clippings and printed material.
John B. Hutson (1891-1964) was a native of Murray, Kentucky. He received a B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1917, a M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1930. He joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1921 and became an authority on agricultural marketing with a specialty in tobacco. From 1930-1933 Hutson was marketing specialist for the Foreign Agricultural Service, from 1936-1940 chief of the Tobacco Branch of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, and from 1941-1944 president of the Commodity Credit Corporation. Hutson was appointed undersecretary of agriculture in 1945 and then became assistant secretary general of the United Nations, with responsibility for financial services, a position he held through 1947. In 1947 he became president of Tobacco Associates, representing tobacco growers in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Hutson held that position until his death.
The bulk of the collection consists of articles and talks on tobacco (1947-1964) in his capacity as president of Tobacco Associates.
Topics include the Tobacco Associates program (1947, 1953, 1960, 1962), the effects of World War II on trade relations, export markets for fluecured tobacco, tobacco consumption, the Marshall Plan and the European tobacco tax problems, price stabilization, the World Tobacco Organization (1953), acreage and price prospects, growth of tobacco in Asia, and competition from the Common Market countries (1961, 1962).
Correspondence mainly consists of congratulatory letters on Hutson's appointment as president of the Commodity Credit Corporation, although a 1956 letter to the News and Observer farm editor is in response to an article of flue-cured tobacco and concerns the decline in quality and export sales.
Printed material includes the May 14, 1964, Congressional Record which concerns an amendment of the Act Relating to Associations of Producers of Agricultural Products and a clipping on the goals of the farm program for 1937.
