                Biographical/historical information
                    Joseph Hyde Pratt came to North Carolina in 1897 and lived in Chapel Hill. He was a state mineralogist. He was a state mineralogist from 1897 to 1905. In 1906 he was appointed the state geologist for the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey. During his appointment, he sponsored good road days, conducted good road institutes, and sponsored fisheries and drainage conventions. He took part in the establishment of forest reservations and organized the Southern Forestry Congress, and the North Carolina Forestry Association. Additionally, the Survey published 12 bulletins, two volumes, and six economic papers on the geology and mineral resources of the state. Joseph served 19 years as the state geologist and made a profound impact on forests, drainage of swamp lands, water power, public roads, and fisheries and the fishing industry.
             
            
            
            
                Scope and arrangement
                This collection (1891-1913, 1935, undated) contains clippings, signed petitions, correspondence, field notes and blueprints relating to Big Cold Water Creek Drainage District in Cabarrus Co., to the Hazel Creek section of Swain and Graham counties and to North Carolina Fisheries Committee activities (re oysters and fish) affecting mainly northeastern North Carolina--especially Ocracoke and also Pamlico and Dare counties. There are indications that the material may have originated with N.C. State Geologist Joseph Hyde Pratt.
