This collection deals primarily with the Quinerlys of Greenville, N.C., and related families.
Correspondence, largely of a personal nature, constitutes a large part of the collection. A letter from Guatemala describes the rainy season and amount of wild game there (1895). A series of letters (1917-1940) concerns the Cuban sugar cane industry and describes the outlook for crops and prices. Noteworthy items describe problems arising from a revolution on the island (1917), a trip made to Guantanamo, and the city itself (1939).
Other correspondence includes a description of an Indian reservation school in Oklahoma, typical names of children, and tribe names (1922); a trip to and description of the Olympia theater in Miami, Florida (1930); and life in an ROTC artillery camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee (1917).
A large group of letters (undated) concerns personal and family affairs of the Quinerlys. Among these are items describing an E.C.T.C. commencement and the senior class activities that preceded it; and a traveler's first impressions of Atlanta.
Legal and financial papers (1861, 1864, 1894-1943, undated) include contracts, a stock certificate for the Greenville Cotton Mills, Inc., receipts for general purchases and tax payments, and a copy of a farm tax assessment (1864).
Poetry (1884, 1892, undated) deals with topics such as romance and nature.
Miscellaneous items (1864, 1910-1946, undated) include a handwritten history of Pitt County during the Civil War, a handwritten history of Grifton, a blueprint (filed as oversized material), and other items.
