Papers (1870-1923) consisting business ledgers of a general store, a treasurer's report, a map and eight essays.
Simon Bruton Taylor was born on March 16, 1834, near Kinston, in Lenoir County, North Carolina to Stanton and Nancy Bruton Taylor. In 1864-1865, he commanded the 35th North Carolina Regiment, in General Matt Ransom's brigade in the American Civil War. It was said that he was the last surviving regimental commander of that war, having been wounded four times with the last wound considered serious. In 1858, his occupation was listed as store merchant in Catherine Lake, Onslow, North Carolina.
He married Sallie A. Murrell on March 8, 1866. They had three daughters, Annie Lee Taylor, Katie F. Taylor, and Lucy Bruton Taylor. After the death of his first wife, Taylor married Mrs. Nannie J. Murrell Hoye. On December 2, 1877, the Union Chapel Christian Church was established in Onslow County with Simon Taylor as one of its' 43 charter members. He served as one of the first elders for the church and was an active member for more than fifty years. He died on January 27, 1929, in Catherine Lake, Onslow, North Carolina at the age of 94, and was buried in Catherine Lake, Onslow, North Carolina.

The S. B. Taylor Papers (1870-1923) consist of nine volumes of business ledgers (1870-1923) pertaining to the operation of a general store in the Catherine Lake area of Onslow County, North Carolina; a treasurer's report for the Christian Woman's Board of Missions (1912-1917); a platted map of Williams Land, Onslow County, North Carolina; and eight short essays apparently written by school children.
The business ledgers are of particular interest as they include the names of customers and the various types, quantities and prices of merchandise sold. The ledgers demonstrate the activities of a general store owner during this period such as the renting of farm land, loaning seed to farmers and extending credit to customers. One ledger deals exclusively with the business transactions of naval stores (1870-1872), involving the buying, selling and shipping of turpentine and rosin.
The treasurer's report for the Christian Woman's Board of Missions (Disciples of Christ) is a record kept for Union Chapel of Catherine Lake, North Carolina. The report includes a list of the local members, their contributions and remittances to the national and state organizations.
