Biographical/historical information
Diphtheria is an acute, highly infectious, toxigenic, and vaccine-preventable disease that affects children under 12 years of age. Symptoms include sore throat, swollen glands, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, fever and chills, and tiredness. The diphtheria vaccine was first created in the early 1920s but was not widely used until the 1930s.
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils and is caused by viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms include sore throat, difficulty breathing, fever, red and swollen tonsils, headache, and stiff neck.
Influenza, or the flu, is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms include aching muscles, runny nose, a sore throat, shortness of breath, eye pain, dry cough, and sneezing. The first flu vaccine was created in 1945.
Scope and arrangement
The collection consists of two pieces of correspondence, an estate sale notice, and a bound volume of newspapers. The correspondence concerns incidences of influenza or "la grippe" in Richmond, VA (January 14, 1907), and tonsillitis and diphtheria in Goldsboro, NC (September 23, 1907). The estate sale notice lists items for sale and includes a new cotton gin, supplies for building a gin house, two bushel barrels of apple brandy, 8,000 shingles, and 30 bushel barrels of plank road dip. The bound volume of newspapers contains The Anson Times from October 13, 1880 to October 5, 1881.
