Simon Burney Sr. died in 1829 and had four daughters and four sons: Sarah Wilson, Elizabeth Kilpatrick, Louisa Smith, Rachel Burney, John H. Burney, Bryan Burney, Lewis Burney, and Simon Burney. The Burney family were plantation owners and enslaved over 20 people.
This collection contains two items. The first item reflects a transfer of land ownership within the Moses Moore family. Originally purchased on July 27, 1774, the land lies South of the Tar River and North of Cow Swamps in Pitt County, North Carolina. The document was chartered in 1807 by Moses Moore as a part of the land deed to continue the ownership of the 200 acre land within the generational family. The document was signed and witnessed by Moses Moore, Jr. and akin family members. The second document is the last will and testament of Simon Burney, dated January 29, 1829.
