Collection (1782) consisting of land grant patent.
James Barrow, Sr., the youngest son of William and Elizabeth Barrow, was born circa 1715. Barrow's wife is unknown, though he had two sons: Samuel and William Barrow. In 1782, Barrow was granted a patent for four hundred acres of land on the north side of the Tar River and south of Grindal Creek. The date of his death is unknown.
Alexander Martin (b. 1740 - d. November 2, 1807) was the seventh Governor of North Carolina as well as a Founding Father of the United States. Martin was born in Hunterdon County in the Province of New Jersey to Irish parents. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of New Jersey (now named Princeton University) and then moved to Salisbury, North Carolina. During the Revolutionary War, he was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel and was promoted to colonel after seven months. After being court-martialed for mistaking British troops for Continental soldiers, Martin resigned from the army due to stress and his poor health. Martin was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1778, where he also served as president of the Senate's Board of War. He became the acting governor of North Carolina in 1781, as the present governor had been kidnapped by Tories. In 1782, he was officially elected as Governor of North Carolina. After his term ended, he resumed service at the General Assembly and soon became speaker of the Senate. In 1799, Martin was voted out of the Senate after losing the support of the North Carolina Federalists. In 1804, he resumed service at the General Assembly and again became Speaker of the North Carolina Senate in 1805. Two years later, Martin passed away in Rockingham County, NC.
