                Biographical/historical information
The Lancaster Family has a long history in the United States, but this collection focuses on the Lancaster Family from 1786-1912. The Lancaster family were enslavers and held land in Craven County on the north side of the Neuse River and the West side of Big Swift Creek.

                Scope and arrangement
The collection contains legal records and financial papers of several generations of the Lancaster family.
Land records pertain to the Swift Creek section of Craven County north of the Neuse River and reflect transactions of St. Clair Lancaster, Benjamin Williams, William Bryan, Elisha Griffin, Allen Anderson and Amon Joyner. Other papers include a bill of sale for Miles, a six or seven year old enslaved boy, from his previous enslaver John Nelson to his new enslaver St. Clair Lancaster (1864), correspondence concerning bank financing (1850), a summons, a plat for land on Swift Creek, mortgages, and receipts.
