The O'Neal Foundation was organized on June 9, 1949, in Greenville, N.C, as a result of the brutal murder of William Benjamin O'Neal. O'Neal, a veteran of World War II, was 28 at the time of his death and was married to Margaret Virginia Dixon O'Neal, whom he had at least one child with. The citizens of the Greenville area organized the foundation to solicit funds to build Margaret and her children a new home.
This collection contains the papers of the O'Neal Foundation, organized June 9, 1949, in Greenville, N.C., as a result of the brutal murder of William Benjamin O'Neal. Correspondence includes several letters of appreciation for contributions to the Foundation. One letter to Carl Goerch gives a description of the actual O'Neal murder and asks him to tell of the Foundation's plans.
The collection also contains by-laws, resolutions, committee membership listings, and financial reports of the O'Neal Foundation.
Also in the collection are several newspaper clippings and a proclamation by the Mayor of Greenville.
