Biographical/historical information
Edmon Brinkley was born circa 1800 in North Carolina. In February of 1823, he bought land from Alexander Parish. In July of 1834, he bought land from William and Humphrey Wright. He married Susan Evans in December of 1825 in Chowan County, N.C. Between 1829 and 1848, they had at least six children; three daughters and three sons. Edmon's will is dated to March of 1853.
Scope and arrangement
This collection consists of records from Chowan County, N.C., including a deed from Alexander Parish to Edmund Brinkley for the sale of land (1823); a deed from William and Humphrey Wright to Edmund Brinkley for the sale of land (1834); an account book (1848-1853) with financial transactions relating to dry goods, home repairs, and the renting out of enslaved people; as well as the last will and testament of Edmund Brinkley which leaves his personal property, including enslaved people and real estate, to his wife and children (1853). The Hiring-out system allowed a hirer to temporarily rent or lease an enslaved person from an enslaver, generating revenue for the enslaver, through the labor of the enslaved people completing the work.
