Raymond H. Cates and the PPG Industries fiber glass plant that he supervises in Lexington will observe twentieth anniversaries next year. Cates began his PPG career at the company’s Shelby fiber glass plant, which opened in 1967. In this article, Cates discusses his background, experience as a chemist, and the products manufactured by the textile plants.

North Carolina’s economy is continuing to run ahead of the aggregate United States economy in 1986. The state observed increases in industrial power sales, employment rates, and manufacturing at textile and apparel industries. Low inflation and moderate growth is expected to continue in 1987.

Heralded as the most sweeping change in the nation’s tax laws in two decades, new tax-reform legislation will drastically curtail the ability of state and local governments to finance their activities through the traditional means of selling securities whose interest income is exempt from federal income taxes. Activity in the North Carolina market has not been consistent with national market activity. Tax-exempt municipal bonds remain an extremely attractive investment for individuals in North Carolina.

Corporate security consultant, Dan Wilson, president of Charlotte-based Asset Protection Associates, recently investigated substantial thefts of dirt, water, diapers, and many other items. These thefts combined with other dishonest business transactions are a form of business abuse, which cause financial loss to a company. Wilson discusses how to recognize business abuse and educate employees.
