Water-powered mills were prominent in Rutherford County during the late 19th-century but numbered only ten in 1946. These mills ground corn into meal but were phased out when gas run engines were introduced.
Starting out in 1871, the well-known Raleigh printing firm of Edwards & Broughton has been in business ever since and is now recognized as one of the greatest printing firms in the South. Over thirteen years ago the firm took over the contract for printing The State magazine.
