Abstract:
Anthony Caro’s Table Piece CXCIV sculpture was recently acquired by the Museum. Caro is a British artist who has primarily created abstract sculptures over the past few years. Table Piece CXCIV is made of welded steel and appears thrown together, but was constructed with great care. Caro explains that the meaning of the piece is conveyed by its gesture and form rather than by its geometric shape or realistic representation of something.

To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of its opening, the Museum will present an exhibition of fort-five seventeenth-century Dutch paintings from its collection. This collection is considered one of the finest in the United States and will be paired with approximately thirty etchings and copper plates by Rembrandt lent from the collection of Robert Lee Humber. The history of Dutch art in the seventeenth century is discussed in depth and is unlike art from other European countries during the seventeenth century. The Dutch art from the time period is characterized as being more human and natural, reflecting contemporary life.

Abstract:
North Carolina artist Dennis Zaborowski will have his work featured this winter in the North Carolina Gallery. A small selection of large charcoal drawings will be the focus of the new exhibition and are the latest development in Zaborowski’s career and style. The subject of these works revolve around the physical interaction of people and their relationships. All of the subjects come from Zaborowski’s personal experience or memories.

The self-portraits of Viennese artist Arnulf Rainer will be exhibited in the Contemporary Gallery this winter. This will be the first solo exhibition of Rainer’s work in North America. Rainer’s portraits have been altered after they were drawn on by the artists creating extreme emotional images. Rainer’s work is often described as disturbing or violent due to the distorted images.

The Mary Duke Biddle Education Gallery will host an exhibition that will help answer how artists make their artworks. The exhibit will provide an in-depth look at a variety of techniques in sculpture and painting. The focus will be on some of the technical devices used by artists for bronze casting, stone carving, tempera painting on panel, and painting on canvas. Several famous artworks from artists such as Cecco di Pietro, Andrew Wythe, Elliot Daingerfield, Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet, Howard Mehring, Jo Davidson, and Fracesco Laurana will be displayed with explanations of how the artists created their masterpieces.

Abstract:
An exhibition by draftsman and painter Rico Lebrun will be on display through November in the Twentieth Century Gallery. Lebrun has been little studied since his death in 1964, but a recent revival of interest in figurative art, religious content, and expressionist paint handling has brought him back to the spotlight. Lebrun’s work often featured themes such as man’s inhumanity and man’s sacrifice. The work and the artists are described in preview of the exhibition curated from the Museum's permanent collection.

The Museum recently acquired two antelope headpieces or Tji Wara of the Bamana people of Mali. These two pieces are among the best known types of African sculpture and are classic examples of African art. The headpieces would have been worn by performers in agricultural ceremonies. The male and female pairs like these appeared at hoeing and ground-clearing occasions and were worn by the hardest workers in honor of the mythical being Tji Wara who taught mankind the secret of agriculture.

Dutch, Flemish Paintings Treated for Exhibition The Museum’s conservation staff have been performing conservation treatement on Dutch and Flemish paintings selected for display as part of the upcoming “Dutch Art in the Age of Rembrandt” exhibition this fall. These works immediately became top priority after the exhibition was scheduled. Originally treated in 1982, the conservators referred to that survey to guide them toward troublesome areas for each painting. The process of restoration is described in detail with the work on the painting The Dentist by Dutch artist Jan Miensz Molenaer is of particular focus.

Four of the featured artists of Estampas de la raza are interviewed about the challenges they face in creating their art, how their cultural background affects their work, and how Estampas continues to influence them. Vincent Valdez, Oscar Magallanes, Ceasr Martinez, and Sonia Romero are all interviewed. The four artists all contributed prints to the exhibition and discuss how being Latino has affected their work and perspective. The exhibition highlights contemporary prints created by Latino and Hispanic artists.

The Museum recently acquired six new works of art and is opening a new video gallery in the East Building. Giovanni Martinelli’s Memento Mori: Death Comes to the Table circa 1630-38, Yink Shonibare’s, MBE Wind Sculpture II 2013, Flemish, Antwerp School’s Saint Jerome in His Study circa 1560-70, Hieronymus Mittnacht’s Torah Shield 1747-49 are four of the works that were acquired. The artist of each work, an illustration of the work, and a description of the subject and style are detailed. A preview of the upcoming exhibits in the new video gallery is also included and will feature the work of James Nares.

The new exhibit Sacred Motherhood: Mother-and-Child Representations form the Permanent Collection explores the symbolism of a woman caring for a child. The exhibit brings together 13 pieces of art from numerous cultures and spanning thousands of years. The exhibit attempts to show the multiple phases of motherhood - from pregnancy to the pain of separation through death.

The new exhibit Small Treasures: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Their Contemporaries will be on display in the Meymandi Exhibition Gallery through January. This exhibition is the first ever to focus on small portraits by Dutch and Flemish painters from the seventeenth century. During the seventeenth century, portrait painting was not highly regarded, but the group of artists exhibited elevated the status of portraiture with their skill. The exhibition is previewed by describing the history of the period, describing portraits painted by Vermeer and Rembrandt , and describing the impact of masterpieces.

The North Carolina Museum of Art’s statue of Bacchus is a composite of two ancient fragments that were assembled along with other baroque additions. The discovery was initially made in 1958 and it was never displayed as a result. A derestoration is planned over the next couple of years. The torso is one of only four other Roman imperial-period torsos known to exist and is from 2nd century, the head of Bacchus is from the 1st-3rd century and belonged to a Roman statue of a Greek Dionysos, and the left arm, hand, and some supports are baroque additions and will be removed eventually.

Allen G. Thomas, Jr. of Wilson, NC recently donated over 60 contemporary photographs to the Museum. Select photographs will be exhibited through this spring. The works cover a range of photographic techniques and processes and show the diversity of contemporary photography. Thomas’s collection has proved as a catalyst for the expansion of the Museum’s permanent photography collection.
