Though no conclusive explanations have seen light regarding the fate of the 1587 Roanoke Island colonists, there have been some intriguing research finds. One involves a location in present-day Bertie County. The First Colony Foundation is continuing excavations of the site.

Abstract:

In March 1976, five burned bodies were discovered just outside of the town of Columbia. William Bradford Bishop of Bethesada, Maryland murdered his wife, mother and three young children before rmoving them 300 miles south to Tyrrell County and depositing the bodies.
