Research shows that pets provide people with health benefits, such as stress relief and decreased risk for heart disease. Through the New Leash on Life program, inmates at the Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro, North Carolina are assigned as dog trainers and tasked with rehabilitating shelter dogs. The dogs have a calming effect on inmates and help improve mental health.

Several of these artisan chocolatiers are helping their local economy, and winning awards at national and international competitions.

In Yadkin County, teacher and pastor Chris Hauser is working to fill both the spiritual and physical needs of those in his community. Hauser organized Impact Yadkin to help homeowners with construction repairs and to make their homes more accessible. At the same time, local youth volunteers learn hard work, compassion, service and a desire to better their community.
